Tai Koo Shing – Home design
The flat is owned by a mother and a daughter who came to Hong Kong for work. Due to cultural difference and their interest in cooking, the owners pay special attention on the size, equipment, storage, functions and outlook of the kitchen. On the other hand, the flat consists of two bedrooms, one living room and one dining room. As the height of the flat is limited and the design of the living room and dining room are in Zic Zac form, there is a lack of natural lighting in the interior environment. Even with the assistance of roof lighting, both of the rooms are still very dark which create a sense of discouragement and lifelessness. Therefore, the designer spent a lot of efforts in dealing with natural light problem.
Regarding the 2 residential design requirements from the owners, for the kitchen, our designer especially changed the dimension from square design to rectangular design. This increases the size of the kitchen to 100 sq feet and allows a well-stock of electric appliances and cooking equipment. Our designer also added different functions of stainless steel basket into the cabinet. That way, the store function of the kitchen is further enhanced of which normal kitchen design cannot be comparable. All cabinet doors are wrapped with stainless steel which also makes the kitchen more durable and elegant. On the other hand, for Spacing design, our designer purposely used a hidden door to prevent lampblack sneaking out to the dining room. Also, a big glass is reserved on the dining table so that the whole cooking process can be clearly seen in living room and dining room. This concept is in line with the design of some fine dining restaurants which changes the cooking habit of the owners into a living art.
As the kitchen spacing is changed, the dining room is now moved forward and therefore not limit to the previous Zic Zac form design. Natural light can pass through the living room and reach dining area which solved the lighting problem, which definitely a win-win situation. A white suspended TV wardrobe fitted on Khaki-colored wall creates a sentiment of simplicity and elegance in living room. Supplement with leather sofa, the owners can lie down and enjoy a rest in this relaxing atmosphere after a busy time at work. The whole flat is covered by light wooden flooring, with white color as the major color tone. This enhances the sense of harmony, cleanliness and brightness of the flat.
The design of master bedroom also showcases the extensive interior design experience of our designer. To cater the need of the mother who works in finance sector, our designer thinks of many different ways to accommodate large wardrobes, book shelves and one large L-shape desk into a small room so that the owner can work in her bedroom. This shows our designer’s effort in designing the flat, especially not wasting any spaces in putting all the furniture together.
Though the size is small, we are also very careful about the storage and function of the bathroom. The lighting design creates surprises to the narrow spaces of bathroom.
